Burnout Is Just A Code Word
If you want to understand burnout at your organization, the first thing to know is that burnout is just a code word.
It’s a signifier of so many things that people are completely overwhelmed by; or that they don’t have the language for; or a deep well of unspoken truths that they don’t feel safe to address.
It’s the big systemic things:
Late-stage capitalism, colonialism, the patriarchy, white supremacy, massive holes in our social safety nets, climate crises, the apparent collapse of democracy in certain countries.
It’s personal:
Grief, loss, trauma. Childcare and eldercare pressures. Financial insecurity. Divorce. Lack of tools or support to navigate it all.
And it’s professional:
Workloads, unclear expectations, lack of resources, interpersonal conflict, organizational change, recruitment and retention challenges, knowledge gaps, and emails. Endless emails.
It’s trying to exist in this world, wanting joy and peace and freedom – trying to make meaning and find connection.
So, you might say “burnout” – but trust me, there’s a whole lot more beneath the surface.
